PNNL/UW Joint Institute Awards Eligibility
Awards for Collaborations Eligibility Application Process Selection Criteria JIN Acknowledgement
The Application Process
The application package will include the following original documents:
- Completed application form. Student applicants must attach their transcripts and GRE forms. Current awardees that are applying for extensions need not include the transcripts or GRE forms again. Hosts with potential postdoc candidates identified should include transcripts, letters of recommendation and resumes for the best candidate for each position requested.
- Research proposal - not to exceed three (3) pages or 1500 words. (Figures and references can be separate, in addition to the three pages. LDRD, IR&D or other white papers or proposals may be acceptable in most circumstances, and may exceed the 3 page limit if already prepared for another such competition.) The proposal must list the UW professor and PNNL staff member who will mentor the project. Potential PNNL mentors need to indicate their willingness and ability to support any Award requests directly to the PNNL/JIN Co-Director before an award proposal can be evaluated. Current awardees that are applying for extensions also should attach a maximum three (3) page progress report and a list of publications acknowledging their award. (Attach ONE copy of each paper.)
- Resume - required for all team members except students, but including postdocs, when they are already identified by the application team.
- Budget - Itemize the awards type(s) being requested and the dollar amounts of each type requested. Itemize costs requested for: (1) salaries, (2) fringe benefits, (3) tuition waivers, (4) housing and (5) travel. If this application is linked to an upcoming application for a PNNL LDRD or IR&D grant, please indicate on the budget page that it is so linked, specifying also the due date for that LDRD or IR&D proposal. Also, itemize in the budget the expenses outside of the current award request which will be requested in that LDRD or IR&D proposal, specifying clearly which expenses are requested as a Joint Institute award, and which are not.
- List of other grants and funding support. The lists for UW mentor(s) should be submitted in NSF or NIH format. List amounts for "direct costs" only. (NOT needed for current awardees seeking extensions.) PNNL mentors should list primary sources of funding, amounts and names of programs.
- Letter(s) of recommendation:
- For student applicants only: at least three (3) letters of recommendation, including one letter from a UW or PNNL mentor of the proposed research.
- As indicated in item 1), research teams submitting names of potential postdoc candidates should include at least three (3) letters of recommendation for each known candidate. Any new application involving a current UW or PNNL postdoc should include 3 outside letters of recommendation, plus additional letters from his/her current UW and/or PNNL mentor(s). c. For current student and postdoc awardees seeking extensions only: one (1) letter from the advisors, evaluating the awardee's progress in the past funded period.
