| The NME Minor directly connects to educational programs in departments within two colleges, resulting in a discipline tailored approach towards interdisciplinary education in nanoscale science and molecular engineering. Through the NME Minor, students will enhance their education via a hands-on introduction to diverse approaches to nanoscale phenomena and molecular engineering while remaining grounded in a major discipline. They will work directly with other students and faculty both within and outside their home departments and colleges, preparing themselves to be leaders in the modern workforce, where the ability to work across disciplines is an essential skill. | |

So small that we expect to see only the fuzziness and graininess of the molecular underpinnings of our world, its uncertainty, its dynamics. How surprising it is then, that the world of the very small should align itself in perfect order in some cases, allowing atoms to be manipulated precisely, like so many toy soldiers. Or, assemble spontaneously into structures that demonstrate action and function. And yet, properties of individual molecules and atoms are distinct from their aggregate properties, creating exciting new possibilities for properties of the very small. And how remarkable is man's ingenuity in finding ways to profit from thisÿÿ. In this year's Pinkham symposium, we plan to explore the very, very small and to better understand the applications of nanotechnology which might allow us to make unique new materials, tiny gadgets, and therapeutics to probe our world ever more deeply, to identify new ways to image the body and treat diseases, to revolutionize the world of computing and communications. | |

| Undergraduate Scholarship Office - The Merage Institute Fellowship Program is specifically designed to fund students who have immigrated to the U.S. and are either a new citizen or a permanent residence with the intention to become a U.S. citizen. | Foresight Institute - Dr. David Baker of the University of Washington, Department of Biochemistry, and Dr. Brian Kuhlman, of the University of North Carolina, Dept of Biochemistry and Biophysics, received the theory prize for their development of RosettaDesign, a program that has a high success rate in designing stable protein structures with a specified backbone folding structure. Their work includes the design of the first protein to be constructed with a backbone fold not observed in nature; in experimental testing, the novel backbone structure was found to be extremely stable and to match the predicted structure with atomic-level accuracy.
