Requirements of Optional Ph.D. in Nanotechnology and Chosen Discipline

1. Courses

The required courses are designed to provide the students a solid foundation in selected areas of nanotechnology, a broad overview of the entire arena of nanotechnology, and the specialized expertise represented by one of the home department fields. The students should:

Complete the course requirements of home department and other requirements for the Ph.D. Candidacy Exam (called General Exam).
Complete "Frontiers in NanoTechnology" course. Faculty members from different participating departments introduce graduate students to their current research in nanoscience and nanotechnology.
Complete three graduate-level courses relevant to Nanotechnology, of which two courses should be taken outside the home department. Students can select courses from the following topic clusters: nanoengineered particles and materials, microfabrication and nanofabrication, analytical tools to probe nanostructures, nano-biology, and nanotech applications. Complete four quarters of Nanotechnology Seminar, a weekly interdepartmental seminar course with an emphasis on intellectual interactions of nanotechnology community.

2. Lab Rotation

Lab rotations allow students to get early exposure to multidisciplinary research environments and in addition to their work inside their home department. Students must complete at a least one one-quarter-long research rotation under the supervision of someone who is not their research supervisor, and who is in a department different from that of their supervisor. Students may also fulfill this requirement with an off-site internship. Click here for more information.

3. Thesis Research

Graduate students qualify for the Optional Ph.D. program only under the conditions that their research advisors are affiliated members of the Center and their thesis research is in nanoscale science and technology. Click here for more information.
